The McIntyre Company had its auspicious beginnings, strangely enough, in a time of national upheaval: the Great Depression of 1929. William Cleveland McIntyre, a developer and landlord, had to sell all but two of his properties to survive and wound up owning and managing two neighborhood markets in Hollywood and San Marino.

His son, William Louis, Sr., worked as a butcher as a youth attending Hollywood High and later to support his new family. Yet he felt drawn to the family's original roots of development and construction.

After serving in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 and seeing action in the Pacific Theater (he went ashore with the second wave of American troops at Iwo Jima), William Louis, Sr. returned home to earn a business degree from the University of Southern California.

One day, father and son went for a drive that would forever change their lives.

They were searching for a location where they could build homes for American servicemen returning from the war and where William Louis, Sr. could settle down to raise his new family and have a successful business.

They headed east along Garvey Ave. until they found an ideal location: The City of Covina.

Soon after, in 1947, they purchased a piece of land, sub-divided it and built their first two homes. The two would build more than 1,500 new homes over a 30-year span.

In the late 1960s, William Louis, Sr., with his son, William (Bill) Louis, Jr., also a USC business school graduate, began developing small office buildings on major Covina thoroughfares (Citrus, Barranca, Grand, Rowland and others). Their first office building, located on Rowland Avenue, has been the home of The McIntyre Company for more then 40 years.

In 1972, with the continued success of the office projects, Bill, Jr. was named president of the company. He would forever change The McIntyre Company’s focus by shifting its efforts from home building to the development and management of investment properties.

Under Bill's watch, from 1972 to the present, The McIntyre Company has developed over 500,000 sq. ft of office and retail properties and has joint ventured to develop an additional 600 homes.

Today, The McIntyre Company is still family-owned and operated. It owns and manages over 350,000 square feet of office and retail space made up of 19 properties. Bill serves as company president. His son, Andrew McIntyre, who continued the family tradition by earning a degree in public policy, management and planning from USC, was recently brought into the company as senior project manager to help run the business."

Father and son cite four factors crucial to their success: four generations of McIntyre construction and property management history, exceptional customer service, quality of development and community involvement.

"Designing real estate projects and then seeing them come to life is one of the most rewarding aspects of this job," says Bill McIntyre, Jr. “Our family has been in the real estate development business for a long time, yet we still get excited when we have the opportunity to develop a property that will enhance and attract businesses to the community."

Adds Andrew McIntyre, "All of my family has been born and raised in the communities we serve, and we still live in those communities, so we take our work very seriously. It's rewarding to know that The McIntyre Company improves neighborhoods and increases property values wherever our projects are located."

Raised in Covina, Bill McIntyre attended Covina High School, where he played both basketball and golf. He earned a B.S. from the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business in 1969, but noted that he's been working at his father William's company (founded in 1946) "my whole life. I never had a second thought." The most rewarding part of his job is "designing real estate projects and then seeing them come to life."

Bill sits on the board of directors of the University of La Verne and of the Covina Irrigating Company. He also served for many years in the Covina Lion's Club and was finance chairman for Citrus Valley Health Partners for 20 years.

Outside work, he enjoys reading, traveling, and trying new restaurants and types of food. Bill cited his marriage of 33 years to Diane, and raising "four beautiful children" (Claudine, 32, Cynthia, 30, William III, 28, and Andrew, 26) as his most memorable achievements. What makes the McIntyre Company stand out from other businesses is, in Bill's words, quite simple: "We care about our clients."
